Uerdinger

Uerdinger is a fine-spicy "Klarer", which aroma is mainly caused by juniper berries, which best kinds come from the Toscana. The exact mixture and distillation methode are secret of the House Melcher & Co in Uerdingen at the Lower-Rhine. Since Henri Melcher, who was a "patented distiller" in Uerdingen and who created a schnapps for emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in 1804, the 38 % - "Klarer" has been produced in Uerdingen without any changes.

Ugli

It is a crossbreeding of Tangerine and Grapefruti, but smaller in its size than grapefruit. Its skin is thick, the fruit is sweet with just a few seeds. Mainly it is coming from Israel and used like grapefruit.

Uisge Beatha

The name: Whisky comes from the gaelic word Uisge Beatha (=water of life)

Underberg

In Rhineberg at the Lower Rhine, Hubert Undenberg invented the recipe for his world-famous Bitter in 1846. The mixture is a family-secret. Decendants of Hubert Undenberg still run the company, in the fourth generation, today. Underberg is produced from noblest herbs (coming from 43 countries), pure well-water and high percentage-alcohol. The herbs are macerated warmly in pure wine-spirit for a few weeks before treated any further, which means, they are placed in water and pass their aroma-substances. The lavish production-procedure ends in a long ripening process inoak barrels. This storage time gives anough time, that the herbs can open their active substances. Alcohol content: 44 %. About one million of portion-bottles, covered in straw paper are filled up daily and sent in unmixable green boxes to the whole world.

Unicum

The 42 % stomache-bitter Unicum of the company Zwack is produced according to a traditional recipe in Solaro near Milan. The Zwacks come from Hungary, the House was situated in Budapest first, but today Zwack is working in Italy and Austria.

Usher's

In the early 19th century, whisky was only produced from Single Malt. These whiskies, having a strong malt-taste, was not very popular outside of Scotland. The most popular drinks in England were Gin and Brandy those days. Andrew Usher belongs to the producers, who ,in a big deal, changed the production of Scotch Whisky, and linked with it the change of the drinking habits of the English and other people in the world. Usher was a "Lowland" representative of a Highland distiller. In 1853, he started to mix different types of whisky and produced the first Blended Scotch. The House Usher became famous quickly for its light Blending-Whiskies, corresponding big was the success of the business. In 1860, Andrew Usher jr. bought the Edinburgh Distillery; he improved the Blend-technique by mixing heavy Highland Malts, light Lowland Malts and Grain Spirit-Whiskies to get a Usher's Whisky being uniform in colour, taste and quality. The success of "Usher's Green Strip" spread quickly to the farest places in the British Empire. In 1880, a Group of Single Malt Distillers declared a fight to the Scotzch Blending. A commision of the British House of Commons, especially working on this problem,, refused to prohibid or limit the blending, pleasing Andrew Usher's production methodes. In 1919, Usher's became part of the in 1779 founded J & G Stewart Ltd., when this one took over by the Edinburgh distillery. Exported by Usher's to Germany are: Green Stripe Blended Scotch Whisky (40 %), de-Luxe-Blended Scotch Whisky 12 Years Old (43 %) and Blair Athol Pure Malt Scotch Whisky 8 Years Old (40 %).
