These are the berrys of the in Europe wild growing bilberry plant, mostly the fruits are of the size of a pea and the colour is blue-black. Today you can also see it growing in gardens (garden bilberry). Rich in vitamins A, B and C, used as juice as well as syrup and nectar. Fresh fruit is also used to decorate Cobblers and Claret cups or punch, another word for it is blueberry, french Myrtilles.

Bitter

Bitter sind Branntweine, die aus bestimmten Grundstoffe und Essenzen mit oder ohne Zucker hergestellt werden und einen Mindestalkohol von 32 Prozent haben. Bei der Produktion dürfen Wein und Wermutwein mitverwendet werden, die Menge darf jedoch nur so groß sein, daß höchstens ein Prozent des Alkoholgehalts vom fertigen Produkt daraus stammt. Bitter werden meist aus Kräutern, Wurzeln, Samen, Früchten, Blüten, Rinden und Hölzern im Mazerations- oder Infusionsverfahren hergestellt. Beim Import von Spirituosen spielt eine Gerichtsentscheidung eine Rolle. Der Europäische Gerichtshof hat bestimmt, daß die Festsetzung eines Mindestalkoholgehalts für Trinkbranntweine eines Mitgliedstaats der Europäischen Gemeinschaft (EG) einer verbotenen Einfuhrbeschränkung gleichkommt, wenn es sich um die Einfuhr eines in einem anderen Mitgliedstaat rechtmäßig hergestellten und verkauften alkoholischen Getränks handelt. Das heißt, daß in EG-Ländern hergestellte Spirituosen auch dann Deutschland verkauft werden dürfen, wenn sie nicht den geforderten Mindestalkohol aufweisen. Bekannte und an der Bar unentbehrliche Mix-Bitter sind Angostura und Orangen-Bitter, die Apertif-Bitter Campari, Cynar und Suze sowie die Digestifs Boonekamp, Fernet-Branca, Underberg, Ramazzotti, Zwack Unicum, Averna u. a.

Black & White

Im Jahre 1884 gründete James Buchanan seine Whisky-Firma in London. Der milde Buchanan Blend traf genau den Geschmack der Verbraucher, in kurzer Zeit war die schwarze Flasche mit dem weißen Etikett ein Erfolg. 1904 wurde Black & White Scotch Whisky als Warenzeichen eingetragen. Die Flasche wurde im Laufe der Jahre modernisiert, sie zeigt aber immer auf dem Etikett die beiden bekannten Hunde: einen West Highland White und einen Scottish Terrier. Beide werben bereits seit 1890 für das Unternehmen. Buchanan's Blending- und Abfüllbetrieb in Stepps in der Nähe von Glasgow wurde 1969 eröffnet, er ist einer der größten und modernsten Betriebe der Scotch-Whisky-Industrie. Die 13 Abfüllstraßen, die von über 500 Arbeitern bedient werden, können pro Stunde 42 000 Flaschen füllen. Etwa 85 Prozent der Produktion sind für den Export bestimmt. Neben dem "Black & White" (40 Prozent) gibt es noch eine Spezialabfüllung, den "Buchanan's Reserve" Twelve Years Old (43 Prozent).
